WHAT IS WITH THOSE EGOCENTRIC NEOCONS
It seems like these 'language freaks' should either learn another language or talk to someone who knows something about language and skills required to become multi-linguistic before endorsing a law to require ENGLISH ONLY.
If too lazy, here is the short of it.
Some people can become fluent in another language very quickly while others struggle for a long time, and some never become proficient. Some people are better suited for law, biology, chemistry, science, mathematics, astronomy, but are dummies in language.
It is easiest to learn a language from very young, the young mind being like a sponge, absorbing it easily.
As people grow older, even those with multiple language skills will have a more difficult time learning and remembering new words.
Asking non-english speakers to learn english should be a goal but not a legal requirement. It should be a requirement if the performance of the job necessitates speaking english. Just like you would not hire Bush if you needed eloquent speech, so you would not hire someone who does not speak the required language.
Do you then fire an emplyoee who serves a customer who does not understand english?
As long as there are people with the same mother-tongue, they will speak it. No language sounds better to each as that learned from mother. This does not address the occasions when one does not know a certain word and has it explained to him/her in a foreign language, will that make him a criminal?
ENGLISH ONLY is fundamentall RIDICULOUS
We are nationally one country, although culturally diverse.
